I have lived in Avoca for 5 years, I am a grandmother with 4 young grandchildren. It has never been explained to the residents and many thousands of beach users who come from all over Australia and the world, that a surplus warship will be scuttled just 1700 mts from such a pristine environment. In this era of environmental awareness and concern it is AMAZING this could even be considered without full consultation, meticulous scrutiny of hazardous materials being removed and an open report by a recognised scientific expert that this ship will be safe to dump.
Over the past 2 Monday nights Australian Story has presented concerns about environmental contamination in Tasmania - possible cause human intervention. Last night our Prime Minister told the 7.30 Report in respect to the insulation debacle that “I did not ask enough questions”.
I implore all Councillors and Federal/State politicians ASK MORE QUESTIONS and be ACCURATE and TRANSPARENT so that we can be provided with scientific ASSURANCES that you have not started a process of CONTAMINATION that can NEVER be REMEDIATED.
Otherwise come March 27th Avoca Beach will be a ships graveyard and perhaps the beach as well!!!!!!
