The Save Halkett Bay group in British Columbia have been successful in stopping the dumping of an ex-warship HMAS Annapolis in Halkett Bay. Congratulations!

Opponents of a proposal to sink the former HMS Annapolis in Halkett Bay called on the Federal Government today to declare a moratorium on the practice of sinking former Canadian warships rather than recycling them. The call followed the BC Provincial Parks’ refusal last week to allow the Artificial Reef Society of BC to sink the 120-metre-long Annapolis in the Halkett Bay Marine Park, on Gambier Island.

The Province, in a letter dated August 25, 2010, said it could not issue a permit for the sinking because the proposed activity would “cause the natural resource (the current natural near-shore fine sediment seabed) to be destroyed, damaged and disturbed. The proposed activity is also not necessary for the maintenance or preservation of the recognized recreation values for the Park.”
